Zinaida Mukhortova visits Poland
A Kazakh human rights defender and attorney, Zinaida Mukhortova came to Poland in early December. During her two-day visit, Mukhortova met with representatives of the Open Dialog Foundation, members of the Polish Parliament: Małgorzata Gosiewska (‘Law and Justice’) and Marcin Święcicki (‘Civic Platform’), as well as with Piotr Iwaszkiewicz from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland.
For many years, Mukhortova has fought in Kazakhstan for human rights; in connection with her activities, she has repeatedly been persecuted. After July 2009, when a conflict arose between her and the deputy of the lower house of parliament, Yerlan Nigmatulin, whom Mukhortova accused of exerting pressure on the court, the Kazakh authorities wanted to institute a criminal case against her, but eventually they subjected her to forced psychiatric treatment. Only this year, was she exonerated under a rulingby the Supreme Court.
