aprSince his arrest on the basis of a ‘red notice’, Mukhtar Ablyazov has already spent nearly two years in different detention facilities in France. Now, as the extradition trials have come to an end, the fate of the famous Kazakh oppositionist will depend on a decision by the French government.

octPACE has published a statement concerning the case of the Kazakh dissident, Mukhtar Ablyazov, which has so far been signed by eight its members, such as the head of Human Rights Committee at the Bundestag Frank Schwabe, Pieter Omtzigt, Mailis Reps and Kimmo Sasi.

In December 2016 Mukhtar Ablyazov’s extradition was refused, he was released from prison and granted a political refugee status in September 2020. Earlier, a number of his relatives and associates had been given international protection in various European countries. Thus, continuing to campaign for human rights in Kazakhstan and the rights of political refugees amongst them, we consider our mission largely fulfilled.
