junItalian news site Repubblica.it reports that Maurizio Improta, who played a key role in the deportation of the wife and daughter of the dissident Mukhtar Ablyazov, has been promoted. The decision to promote him was allegedly made on June 23 this year at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Italy.

In December 2016 Mukhtar Ablyazov’s extradition was refused, he was released from prison and granted a political refugee status in September 2020. Earlier, a number of his relatives and associates had been given international protection in various European countries. Thus, continuing to campaign for human rights in Kazakhstan and the rights of political refugees amongst them, we consider our mission largely fulfilled.
