Catherine Ashton’s response
MEPs Niccolò Rinaldi, Graham Watson and Nicole Kiil-Nielsen received from Catherine Ashton - High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, a response to their question, filed in mid-October, regarding the persecution of political opponents by Kazakhstan.
In their letter, the MEPs referred to the cases of Mukhtar Ablyazov, Alexander Pavlov and Tatiana Paraskevich. In her brief response, Catherine Ashton confirmed that she was aware of the issues raised and would continue to monitor these along with similar cases. She also stressed that various formal and informal occasions are used to encourage the Kazakh authorities to respect international laws banning torture and other cruel treatment.
