Ablyazov’s memories: how he dropped out of school and got into business
In this photo, our daughter Madina is 10 months old. At that time, we lived in a dormitory in the village of Alatau (the Institute of Nuclear Physics). Our nine metre room was very damp, with a single, nailed-up window. In the evenings, mice often ran through the room, evoking mad delight in my daughter.
Because of the dampness, at the age of 9 months, Madina became seriously ill with bilateral pneumonia. We had no money. It was then that I realised that doing science was a luxury that I couldn’t afford. And so I started to do business...
