Another trial in Ablyazov’s case
On 24th October, the Court in Lyon allowed Ablyazov’s extradition. The judges were deaf to the arguments of the defence lawyers pointing to the prospect of torture and an unfair trial faced by the dissident. Neither did the Court agree to hear the witnesses for the defence such as Garry Kasparov, Lev Ponomarev or Mark Feygin. Despite the unfavourable decision of the Lyon Court, the defence will be endeavouring to have its reversed in the next appeal instances.
An appeal was filed with the French Cour de cassation which functions, at the same time, as the Supreme Court. The next hearing in Ablyazov’s case will be held before the Supreme Court on 18th February. The lawyers expect a decision to be given between 4th and 18th March.
Following the court path, the French administration of justice envisages the administrative procedure – the final decision in the matter of extradition will be in the hands of the French Republic’s government.
