Atabayev: “I recognise and admire Mukhtar Ablyazov’s commitment”
Being a member of the opposition during Nazarbayev’s rule is like suicide - wrote Bolat Atabayev on his Facebook page. According to this well-known Kazakh theatre director, not everyone is up for the “opposition marathon”– life under constant fear, under threat, surrounded by uncertainty.
Atabayev describes the life of those who are against the regime. Those in opposition of the system are endangering their families and are themselves under unyielding pressure. But their actions, he notes, are helping to disseminate the voice of protest, even though there is still a long way to go in order to build mass-scale dissent among Kazakh citizens. -
At the same time, Atabayev expressed his admiration for Ablyazov’s commitment: “For 14 years already, he has been the inspiration, the driver and sponsor behind the opposition movement in Kazakhstan.”According to Atabayev, the persecution of Ablyazov is politically motivated – a retaliation for his oppositionist activities.
