Catherine Ashton Replied concerning the Case of Alexandr Pavlov
High Representative of the Union, Catherine Ashton answered the questions about Alexandr Pavlov, former head of security of the Kazakh dissident Mukhtar Ablyazov, posed by the MEPs Ana Gomes and Sylvie Guillaume.
In March this year, Gomes and Guillaume pointed to the irregularities revealed by El Pais daily: pressures on the part of the Kazakh Ambassador on the court Audiencia Nacional, and on the part of the Spanish judge who had wanted to accelerate the handover of Pavlov to Kazakhstan. The European Commission was requested, amongst other things, to explain whether it had called upon the Spanish authorities to ensure the observance of Alexandr Pavlov’s rights.
The answer from Catherine Ashton dated 20th May this year is short, even succinct, and does not contribute anything to Pavlov’s case. We read that the Commission “is following closely the situation of Mr Alexandr Pavlov. Regarding the questions pertaining to extradition, this is under the competence of Member States and is done in accordance with national law and international treaties.”
