Viviane Reding replied regarding the case of Pavlov and Ablyazov
The European Commission’s Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, Viviane Reding, replied to the letter of the Spanish MEPs, Izaskun Bilbao and Inaki Irazabalbeitii who issued an appeal regarding Mukhtar Ablyazov and Alexander Pavlov in November.
Reding thanked the MEP’s for drawing attention to the case of Ablyazov and Pavlov, who face direct or indirect extradition to Kazakhstan. In her response, she stressed that the European Commission cannot intervene in any of the above mentioned cases. This is explained by the fact that the both extradition cases are governed by bilateral extradition agreements, concluded between France and Russia, as well as Spain and Kazakhstan and that said agreements were not subject to EU law.
