Alma Shalabayeva’s visit to Brussels
Alma Shalabayeva, the wife of the Kazakh dissident Mukhtar Ablyazov, met on October 9th in Brussels with MEPs and students. On the same day, she also took part in a demonstration against human rights abuse in Kazakhstan.
During the visit organised by the Open Dialog Foundation, Shalabayeva attended a number of meetings during which she discussed issues related to human rights in Kazakhstan, the case of Mukhtar Ablyazov and the abuse of Interpol by non-democratic countries. One of the issues tackled was the support for the civil community of Kazakhstan by the MEPs through the active monitoring of human rights abuse cases as well as addresses to EU and Kazakh authorities on the issue.
The participants of the meetings included, among others, European Parliament Members Brando Benifei, Ignazio Corrao, Kosma Złotowski and the students of the College of Europe.
