The newspapers: La Repubblica, Il Messaggero and La Stampa published accounts of the conference concerning Alma Shalabayeva, wife of Kazakhstan dissident Mukhtar Ablyazov, which was held in Rome on January 31st.

La Repubblica focused on the photo of Alma Shalabayeva found on the document issued by the Kazakhstan authorities, without which, Alma and her daughter Alua could not have left Italy. In the words of La Repubblica, the photograph seems identical to that on Alma Shalabayeva’s driving licence, which was issued around the same time by the authorities in Kazakhstan and which was found in the hands of the Italian police. Fabio Tonacci, the author of the article, also mentions Shalabayeva’s interrogations, conducted by the prosecutor both those where she was questioned in the capacity of victim of illegal deportation and when she was accused of document forgery. During her press conference, Alma Shalabayeva said she was feeling safe in Italy and was looking for a house or a flat there, in order to build “as normal a life as possible” with her daughter.

The article by Il Messaggero, in turn, describes the role of the police leading Shalabayeva’s deportation case. The author of the article mentions that during a press conference, the lawyers discussed the issue of the three police officers being summoned for interrogation, as their role was of key importance to the course of events. There is, however, no confirmation of the prosecutor’s intention to summon them as part of the investigation into to the events of May last year.

A brief article by La Stampa only goes to mention that Alma was going to look for a place to stay in Rome and her anxiety related to their possible return to Kazakhstan. As La Stampa admits, it was quite an obvious allusion to a request for asylum in Italy, although one not confirmed during the conference itself.
