Italy recognises the refugee status of Alma Shalabayeva
Rome, 18 April 2014 – The Territorial Commission for the Recognition of International Protection in Rome granted “the Status of Refugee in compliance with art. 1 of the Geneva Convention” to Alma Shalabayeva and her daughter, Alua.
Today’s decision has thus confirmed the evident validity of the application, for which prioritised processing had already been ensured, due to the importance and delicacy of the matter.
“We derive great satisfaction from today’s recognition of the refugee status of our client, Alma Shalabayeva”, states Anton Giulio Lana, ESQ, the Secretary General of the Forensic Union for the Protection of Human Rights (UFTDU). “The Territorial Commission in Rome has positively considered the request made by Alma, ensuring international protection by the Italian State to her and her daughter”, explains the lawyer.
On the basis of today’s decision, there will be two residency permits, valid for 5 years, (renewable upon expiry) issued to the mother and daughter. The granting of the status indeed entails putting the refugee on an equal footing with Italian citizens with regard to legally granted rights.
“The territorial commission, after a long and complex hearing, recognised positively the existence of a realistic threat of persecution to Mrs Shalabyeva by Kazakhstan, in connection with the events that precluded her return to her home country” specify the lawyers, Anton Giulio Lana and Alessio Sangiorgi, from the law office Lana – Lagostena Bassi
“After the dramatic events involving Mrs Shalabayeva and her daughter, the recognition of the refugee status certainly constitutes a positive sign regarding the Italian commitment at an international level” concludes Lana, ESQ.
