As international human rights organisations confirm in their opinions, the persecution against one of the leaders of democratic opposition in Kazakhstan, Mukhtar Ablyazov, as well as his associates, is clearly political in character. The recent deportation of Mukhtar Ablyazov’s wife and daughter, conducted unlawfully by Italy, caused a massive political crisis in the country and received widespread publicity across the European Union. If the Ukrainian request for Mukhtar Ablyazov’s extradition from France is found to have been the result of a political scheme, then the “Ablyazov case” may well become yet another hindrance on Ukraine’s way to signing the Association Agreement with the EU in November 2013.
