Refugee Status for Alma and Alua
On 18th April 2014, the Italian authorities granted refugee status to the wife and daugther of the Kazakh dissident, Mukhtar Ablyazov. As reported by Reuters, their lawyer Anton Giulio Lana said in a statement that Alma Shalabayeva and Alua Ablyazova had been granted a five-year, renewable permit of stay.
The decision on the awarding of refugee status was made by the Territorial Commission in Rome for Recognition of International Protection, under Article 1 of the Geneva Convention. The award of refuge status in fact, means they will enjoy rights on a par with Italian nationals.
In May 2013, Shalabayeva along with her six-year old daughter were illegally deported from Italy. Their freedom was pleaded for by the Italian government, the UN and human rights organisations. As a result, at the end of December 2013, Kazakhstan withdrew the restriction on Alma Shalabayeva from leaving city of Almaty thus enabling her to exit Kazakhstan.
