Amnesty International calls for prevention of the Kazakh dissident's extradition © mukhtarablyazov.org

Amnesty International has issued a statement on the decision by the court in Lyon to authorise the extradition of the Kazakh banker and oppositionist, Mukhtar Ablyazov.

As Amnesty emphasises, the court has given the green light to a procedure that may ultimately lead to the forcible transfer of the dissident to his home country, where he is charged with embezzlement and may face torture.

Julia Hall, AIs expert on counter-terrorism, has also pointed out that special services of Russia and Kazakhstan routinely cooperate with each other. She thinks that France should make Ablyazov an example and guarantee that his rights are respected. Otherwise, Europe will have been involved in human rights violations, which are a blight on Central Asian states, including Kazakhstan, warns Hall.
