The Ukrainian portal Trust.ua is continuing its investigation into the matter of the Kazakh dissident Mukhtar Ablyazov. In the opinion of the portal’s journalists, the Winston & Strawn law firm agreed to represent, in France, the interests of Ukraine which demands the extradition of Ablyazov, for a fee of EUR 320,000. The fee is to be paid by Kazakhstan via the law firm Ilyashev and Partners.

Journalists of Trust.ua compare the network of interrelations with a “corruptive octopus” of eight heads which work in harmony to attain one objective. The reporters mention, as the key players in the investigation, Maksim Melnik; Ukrainian investigator, Roman Marchenko; associated with the Ilyashev and Partners law firm, lawyers of Winston & Strawn; who represent Ukraine in the proceedings, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office; represented by Deputy Prosecutor General, Vitaliy Kasko and Kazakhstan’s Prosecutor General’s Office; which covers the costs of all parties engaged in the proceedings.

Trust.ua reveals letters in which Roman Marczenko (Ilyashev and Partners) addresses Staff of the Kazakh Prosecutor’s Office (the prime addressee being Andrey Kravchenko, Deputy Prosecutor General). In his first letter, Marchenko asks, amongst other things, whether BTA Bank will pay for the services of French lawyers who will be presenting the Ukrainian party in Ablyazov’s trial in Lyon. In another one, Marchenko requests assistance with the execution by Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office of several documents. At the same time, Trust.ua’s journalists recall a recent visit paid by representatives of Kazakhstan’s Prosecutor General’s Office to Kiev.
