As the Russian Interfax and ITAR-TASS information agencies state, on February 17th the French court of Aix-en-Provence is to receive the full appeal on the extradition decision against the Kazakhstan dissident Mukhtar Ablyazov.

“As of the present moment, the court is in possession of a summary appeal, and on February 17th Ablyazov’s barristers will submit a full appeal related to the Aix-en-Provence court decision, having on January 9th agreed to our client’s extradition to Russia” – the Interfax agency was told by Ablyazov’s Russian lawyer Mark Feygin. – “It is my goal to prevent Ablyazov’s extradition to Russia. To this end, I have prepared documents proving that my client has in past, financed the opposition movement in Kazakhstan and as such is being persecuted on political grounds” – adds Feygin.

Mukhtar Ablyazov has been detained in France for over six months now, since his arrest on July 31st 2013 on the basis of an Interpol warrant. He is wanted by Kazakhstan, Russia and Ukraine with relation to the alleged fraud and embezzlement he was said to have committed. On January 9th 2014, the Aix-en-Provence court upheld the extradition requests as submitted by Russia and Ukraine. According to human rights organisations - Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch – the decision puts Ablyazov in danger of being handed over to Kazakhstan, where it is expected that he would not face a fair and honest trial.
