Bakhytzhan Ketebayev on Mukhtar Ablyazov
Bakhytzhan Ketebayev, an affiliate of Mukhtar Ablyazov for many years, shared his reflections on his ex-boss with the ‘esquire.kz’ portal.
“Mukhtar Ablyazov’s contribution to opposition activity can be widely discussed, but in my opinion, no-one did more than him – through his personal involvement, support for the media, parties, movements and separate projects and conventions” - Bakhytzhan Ketebayev underlines in an article published in ‘esquire.kz’.
In the article, Ketebayev speaks of the first conflict between Ablyazov and the members of the “Family”, when he refused to give up part of his business to Nazarbayev’s son-in-law, Rakhat Aliyev. The employees attempted to persuade him to accept the “protection” of the Nazarbayev clan, but he refused, saying he would then lose respect for himself. Bakhytzhan Ketebayev perceives this approach as the critical difference between Ablyazov and the majority of wealthy Kazakhstan citizens. In Ablyazov’s case, his self-esteem was in no way related to the amount of wealth he had.
